Chapter (22) sūrat l-ḥaj (The Pilgrimage)
Sahih International: O people, an example is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should steal away from them a [tiny] thing, they could not recover it from him. Weak are the pursuer and pursued.
Pickthall: O mankind! A similitude is coined, so pay ye heed to it: Lo! those on whom ye call beside Allah will never create a fly though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly took something from them, they could not rescue it from it. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought!
Yusuf Ali: O men! Here is a parable set forth! listen to it! Those on whom, besides Allah, ye call, cannot create (even) a fly, if they all met together for the purpose! and if the fly should snatch away anything from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. Feeble are those who petition and those whom they petition!
Shakir: O people! a parable is set forth, therefore listen to it: surely those whom you call upon besides Allah cannot create fly, though they should all gather for it, and should the fly snatch away anything from them, they could not take it back from i weak are the invoker and the invoked.
Muhammad Sarwar: People, listen to this parable: Those whom you worship instead of God do not have the power to create even a fly, even though all of them would come together for the task. If the fly was to snatch something from them they would not be able to rescue it from the fly. How feeble are such worshippers and that which they worship.
Mohsin Khan: O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allah, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought.
Arberry: O men, a similitude is struck; so give you ear to it. Surely those upon whom you call, apart from God, shall never create a fly, though they banded together to do it; and if a fly should rob them of aught, they would never rescue it from him. Feeble indeed alike are the seeker and the sought!
Wahai umat manusia, inilah diberikan satu misal perbandingan, maka dengarlah mengenainya dengan bersungguh-sungguh. Sebenarnya mereka yang kamu seru dan sembah, yang lain dari Allah itu, tidak sekali-kali akan dapat mencipta seekor lalat walaupun mereka berhimpun beramai-ramai untuk membuatnya; dan jika lalat itu mengambil sesuatu dari mereka, mereka tidak dapat mengambilnya balik daripadanya. (Kedua-duanya lemah belaka), lemah yang meminta (dari mendapat hajatnya), dan lemah yang diminta (daripada menunaikannya).
[22:73] Tafsir Jalalayn
(Hai manusia,) yakni penduduk Mekah (telah dibuatkan perumpamaan, maka dengarkanlah oleh kalian perumpamaan itu) yaitu, (Sesungguhnya segala yang kalian seru) kalian sembah (selain Allah) yaitu berhala-berhala (sekali-kali tidak dapat menciptakan seekor lalat pun) lafal Dzubaaban adalah isim jenis, yang artinya jamak, sedangkan bentuk tunggalnya adalah Dzubaabatun; lafal ini dapat dipakai untuk mudzakkar dan muanats (walaupun mereka bersatu untuk menciptakannya) untuk membuatnya. (Dan jika lalat itu merampas sesuatu dari mereka) apa yang ada pada mereka berupa wewangian dan minyak Za'faron yang dilumurkan kepada berhala-berhala mereka itu (tiadalah mereka dapat menyelamatkan sesuatu itu) dapat merampas kembali sesuatu itu (dari lalat itu) karena mereka tidak mampu, mengapa mereka menyembah selain Allah? Yaitu apa-apa yang mereka anggap sebagai sekutu-sekutu Allah. Ini adalah hal yang aneh sekali, diungkapkan oleh peribahasa dengan ungkapan seperti berikut ini, ("Alangkah lemahnya yang menyeru) yakni yang menyembah (dan alangkah lemahnya pula yang diseru) yakni yang disembah.
[22:73] Quraish Shihab
Wahai manusia, Kami akan menampakkan suatu kenyataan yang aneh di depan mata kalian. Maka dengarkanlah dan renungkan! Berhala-berhala itu tidak akan mampu menciptakan apa pun, termasuk seekor lalat, makhluk yang hina dan tidak berarti, meskipun mereka saling membantu untuk menciptakannya. Bahkan apabila makhluk yang tidak berarti itu mengambil sebagian dari binatang persembahan, berhala-berhala itu tidak mampu menghalangi atau mengambilnya kembali. Alangkah lemahnya sesuatu yang dikalahkan oleh lalat karena tidak mampu mengambil kembali sesuatu yang telah diambil darinya. Padahal lalat itu sendiri sudah lemah. Keduanya memang sama-sama lemah, tetapi berhala-berhala itu tampak lebih lemah. Oleh karena itu, bagaimana seorang manusia yang berakal sampai hati untuk menyembah dan mencari manfaat dari berhala-berhala seperti itu.

Hai manusia, telah dibuat perumpamaan, maka dengarkanlah olehmu perumpamaan itu. Sesungguhnya segala yang kamu seru selain Allah sekali-kali tidak dapat menciptakan seekor lalatpun, walaupun mereka bersatu menciptakannya. Dan jika lalat itu merampas sesuatu dari mereka, tiadalah mereka dapat merebutnya kembali dari lalat itu. Amat lemahlah yang menyembah dan amat lemah (pulalah) yang disembah.
