Chapter (2) sūrat l-baqarah (The Cow)
Sahih International: [Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allah , unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]. And whatever you spend of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.
Pickthall: (Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it.
Yusuf Ali: (Charity is) for those in need, who, in Allah's cause are restricted (from travel), and cannot move about in the land, seeking (For trade or work): the ignorant man thinks, because of their modesty, that they are free from want. Thou shalt know them by their (Unfailing) mark: They beg not importunately from all the sundry. And whatever of good ye give, be assured Allah knoweth it well.
Shakir: (Alms are) for the poor who are confined in the way of Allah-- they cannot go about in the land; the ignorant man thinks them to be rich on account of (their) abstaining (from begging); you can recognise them by their mark; they do not beg from men importunately; and whatever good thing you spend, surely Allah knows it.
Muhammad Sarwar: (If the recipients of charity are) the poor whose poverty, because of their striving for the cause of God, has become an obstacle for them, and who do not have the ability to travel in the land, they seem rich compared to the ignorant, because of their modest behavior. You would know them by their faces. They would never earnestly ask people for help. God knows well whatever wealth you spend for the cause of God.
Mohsin Khan: (Charity is) for Fuqara (the poor), who in Allah's Cause are restricted (from travel), and cannot move about in the land (for trade or work). The one who knows them not, thinks that they are rich because of their modesty. You may know them by their mark, they do not beg of people at all. And whatever you spend in good, surely Allah knows it well.
Arberry: it being for the poor who are restrained in the way of God, and are unable to journey in the land; the ignorant man supposes them rich because of their abstinence, but thou shalt know them by their mark -- they do not beg of men importunately. And whatever good you expend, surely God has knowledge of it.
Pemberian sedekah itu) ialah bagi orang-orang fakir miskin yang telah menentukan dirinya (dengan menjalankan khidmat atau berjuang) pada jalan Allah (membela Islam), yang tidak berupaya mengembara di muka bumi (untuk berniaga dan sebagainya); mereka itu disangka: orang kaya - oleh orang yang tidak mengetahui halnya, kerana mereka menahan diri daripada meminta-minta. Engkau kenal mereka dengan (melihat) sifat-sifat dan keadaan masing-masing, mereka tidak meminta kepada orang ramai dengan mendesak-desak. Dan (ketahuilah), apa jua yang kamu belanjakan dari harta yang halal maka sesungguhnya Allah sentiasa Mengetahuinya.
[2:273] Tafsir Jalalayn
(Ialah bagi orang-orang fakir) menjadi predikat atau khabar dari subjek atau mubtada yang dibuang yang diperkirakan berbunyi, "Sedekah itu untuk...." (yang terikat di jalan Allah), maksudnya yang menyediakan diri mereka untuk berjihad. Mereka itu ialah ahli sufi sebanyak 400 orang Muhajirin yang menekuni Alquran dan menunggu kesempatan untuk pergi keluar bersama rombongan pasukan. (Mereka tidak dapat berusaha) atau menjadi musafir (di muka bumi) untuk berdagang dan mencari penghidupan karena kesibukan mereka dalam perjuangan itu. (Orang-orang yang tidak tahu menyangka mereka) melihat keadaan lahiriah mereka (kaya raya karena mereka memelihara diri dari meminta-minta) karena segan dan tak hendak menadahkan tangan mereka. (Kamu mengenal mereka) hai para mukhathab (dengan tanda-tanda) atau ciri-ciri mereka misalnya tawaduk atau rendah hati dan bekas-bekas keletihan. (Mereka tak hendak meminta kepada orang-orang) sesuatu (dengan mendesak) artinya pada dasarnya mereka tak hendak meminta, hingga tidak mungkin pula akan mendesak. (Dan apa saja harta yang baik yang kamu infakkan, maka sesungguhnya Allah mengetahuinya) dan akan membalasnya.
[2:273] Quraish Shihab
Infak tersebut diberikan kepada orang-orang yang fakir karena berjuang di jalan Allah sehingga tidak sempat mencari nafkah. Atau karena mereka terluka di medan perang yang membuat tidak bisa bekerja. Orang-orang yang tidak tahu, menganggap mereka kaya lantaran mereka menghindarkan diri dari meminta- minta. Padahal, jika kamu perhatikan, niscaya akan kamu ketahui keadaan sebenarnya melalui tanda- tandanya. Segala kebaikan yang kalian lakukan pasti Allah ketahui. Dan Dia akan membalasnya dengan yang setimpal.

(Berinfaqlah) kepada orang-orang fakir yang terikat (oleh jihad) di jalan Allah; mereka tidak dapat (berusaha) di bumi; orang yang tidak tahu menyangka mereka orang kaya karena memelihara diri dari minta-minta. Kamu kenal mereka dengan melihat sifat-sifatnya, mereka tidak meminta kepada orang secara mendesak. Dan apa saja harta yang baik yang kamu nafkahkan (di jalan Allah), maka sesungguhnya Allah Maha Mengatahui.
