The triliteral root qāf fā wāw (ق ف و) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:
- once as the form I verb taqfu (تَقْفُ)
- four times as the form II verb qaffay (قَفَّيْ)

Verb (form I) - to pursue

Verb (form II) - to send, to follow
| (2:87:5) waqaffaynā | and We followed up | وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى الْكِتَابَ وَقَفَّيْنَا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ بِالرُّسُلِ |
| (5:46:1) waqaffaynā | And We sent | وَقَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ بِعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ |
| (57:27:2) qaffaynā | We sent | ثُمَّ قَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ بِرُسُلِنَا |
| (57:27:6) waqaffaynā | and We followed | وَقَفَّيْنَا بِعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْإِنْجِيلَ |
