Chapter (2) sūrat l-baqarah (The Cow)
Sahih International: The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
Pickthall: The lightning almost snatcheth away their sight from them. As often as it flasheth forth for them they walk therein, and when it darkeneth against them they stand still. If Allah willed, He could destroy their hearing and their sight. Lo! Allah is able to do all things.
Yusuf Ali: The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things.
Shakir: The lightning almost takes away their sight; whenever it shines on them they walk in it, and when it becomes dark to them they stand still; and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight; surely Allah has power over all things.
Muhammad Sarwar: The lightning almost takes away their vision. When the lightning brightens their surroundings, they walk and when it is dark, they stand still. Had God wanted, He could have taken away their hearing and their vision. God has power over all things.
Mohsin Khan: The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things.
Arberry: the lightning wellnigh snatches away their sight; whensoever it gives them light, they walk in it, and when the darkness is over them, they halt; had God willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Truly, God is powerful over everything.
Kilat itu pula hampir-hampir menyambar (menghilangkan) penglihatan mereka; tiap-tiap kali kilat itu menerangi mereka (dengan pancarannya), mereka berjalan dalam cahayanya. Dan apabila gelap menyelubungi mereka, berhentilah mereka (menunggu dengan bingungnya). Dan sekiranya Allah menghendaki, nescaya dihilangkanNya pendengaran dan penglihatan mereka; sesungguhnya Allah Maha Kuasa atas tiap-tiap sesuatu.
[2:20] Tafsir Jalalayn
(Hampir saja) maksudnya mendekati (kilat menyambar penglihatan mereka) merebutnya dengan cepat. (Setiap kali kilat itu menyinari mereka, mereka berjalan padanya) maksudnya pada cahaya atau di bawah sinarnya, (dan bila gelap menimpa mereka, mereka pun berhenti) sebagai tamsil dari bukti-bukti keterangan ayat-ayat Alquran yang mengejutkan hati mereka. Mereka membenarkannya setelah mendengar padanya hal-hal yang mereka senangi sehingga mereka berhenti dari apa-apa yang dibencinya. (Sekiranya Allah menghendaki, niscaya dilenyapkan-Nya pendengaran dan penglihatan mereka) baik yang lahir maupun yang batin (Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Kuasa atas segala sesuatu) yang dikehendaki-Nya, termasuk apa-apa yang telah disebutkan tadi.
[2:20] Quraish Shihab
Kilat yang mengandung peringatan keras ini hampir-hampir menyambar penglihatan mereka dan dengan bantuan cahayanya mereka melangkah. Ketika cahaya itu sirna dan gelap semakin pekat mereka berhenti dalam keadaan bingung dan tersesat. Orang-orang munafik itu, apabila melihat tanda-tanda kekuasaan Allah yang membuat mereka terpesona, mereka langsung menyatakan keinginan untuk mengikuti petunjuk untuk beriman. Akan tetapi selang beberapa saat mereka kembali lagi kepada kekafiran dan kemunafikan. Sesungguhnya kekuasaan Allah amat luas. Jika berkehendak, Dia melakukan sesuatu. Tidak ada sesuatu pun di langit dan di bumi yang menundukkan-Nya.

Hampir-hampir kilat itu menyambar penglihatan mereka. Setiap kali kilat itu menyinari mereka, mereka berjalan di bawah sinar itu, dan bila gelap menimpa mereka, mereka berhenti. Jikalau Allah menghendaki, niscaya Dia melenyapkan pendengaran dan penglihatan mereka. Sesungguhnya Allah berkuasa atas segala sesuatu.
