Chapter (40) sūrat ghāfir (The Forgiver God)
Sahih International: But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allah which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
Pickthall: But their faith could not avail them when they saw Our doom. This is Allah's law which hath ever taken course for His bondmen. And then the disbelievers will be ruined.
Yusuf Ali: But their professing the Faith when they (actually) saw Our Punishment was not going to profit them. (Such has been) Allah's Way of dealing with His Servants (from the most ancient times). And even thus did the Rejecters of Allah perish (utterly)!
Shakir: But their belief was not going to profit them when they had seen Our punishment; (this is) Allah's law, which has indeed obtained in the matter of His servants, and there the unbelievers are lost.
Muhammad Sarwar: Their faith proved to be of no benefit to them when they became subject to Our torment. Such was God's prevailing tradition among His servants in the past. Thus were the unbelievers destroyed.
Mohsin Khan: Then their Faith (in Islamic Monotheism) could not avail them when they saw Our punishment. (Like) this has been the way of Allah in dealing with His slaves. And there the disbelievers lost utterly (when Our Torment covered them).
Arberry: But their belief when they saw Our might did not profit them -- the wont of God, as in the past, touching His servants; then the unbelievers shall be lost.
Maka iman yang mereka katakan semasa melihat azab Kami, tidak berguna lagi kepada mereka; yang demikian adalah menurut "Sunnatullah" (undang-undang peraturan Allah) yang telah berlaku kepada hamba-hambaNya. Dan pada saat itu rugilah orang-orang yang kufur ingkar.
[40:85] Tafsir Jalalayn
(Maka iman mereka tiada berguna bagi mereka tatkala mereka telah melihat siksa Kami. Itulah sunah Allah) dinashabkannya lafal Sunnatallaahi karena menjadi Mashdar dari Fi'il yang diperkirakan keberadaannya, dan Fi'il tersebut diambil dari lafalnya (yang telah berlaku terhadap hamba-hamba-Nya) yaitu pada semua umat, bahwasanya iman tiada gunanya apabila timbul di kala azab turun. (Dan di waktu itu merugilah orang-orang kafir) yakni jelaslah kerugian mereka; masing-masing di antara mereka mengalami kerugian yang nyata; dan memang sebelum itu pun mereka adalah orang-orang yang merugi.

Tetapi iman yang mereka ucapkan pada saat melihat kejamnya azab itu tidak berguna lagi. Sebab ketentuan Allah telah berlaku pada hamba-Nya, bahwa Dia tidak menerima pernyataan iman yang diucapkan saat diturunkan azab. Saat itu, orang kafir sangat merugi.
